February 20. 2015
The Castello di Brolio is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and cypress trees – on a picturesque hill in the Chianti Mountains. Baron Bettino Ricasoli, for the first time in the late 1860s, decided on what grape varieties a Chianti may contain in this splendid spot in the municipality of Gaiole. Inspired by the French wine philosophy, Castello di Brolio, one of the oldest wineries in the world, has brought three particularly fine wines to the market.
The main wine of the house – Chianti Classico Castello di Brolio, Merlot “Casalferro” and Chianti Classico Colledilà.
The fine wines are the result of a development that began back in 1993 when Francesco Barone Ricasoli took over the winery. He immediately launched an ambitious quality offensive: new vineyards were planted, and a scientifically substantiated program for the selection and propagation of the best ancient Sangiovese clones was set in motion. The youngest member of the famous aristocratic family also analyzed the individual layers – a total of about 250 hectares of vineyards on 1,200 hectares of land – to better understand the characteristics of the vineyards and the influence of the soil on the wine and avoid mistakes on the way from the grape to the bottle to be able to.

Wine region: Tuscany
Locality: Gaiole in Chianti
Classification: D.O.C.G. Chianti Classico
Variety: Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon
Brolio Chianti Classico Riserva from Barone Ricasoli is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet sauvignon. The Riserva is transparent and ruby-red colored. Unfortunately shy and closed in the beginning it reveals aromas of sweet dark cherries, violet, red currant, herbs and licorice with typical Chianti flavors. Fresh, focused and medium-bodied on the palate. Delicate and elegant with a refreshing acidity and very fine-grained tannins. Good finish. It´s not a monument bit rather a well-structured wines. Drink now or through 2019+.
