Maurizio Zanella, one of Italy’s most innovative and ingenious wine producers, produces white and red wines with the highest standards south of Lake d´Iseo.
The headquarters of the company Ca ‘del Bosco was conceived from the beginning as an ultramodern winery of superlatives. Since then, it has grown considerably and is now considered a showpiece in terms of architecture and technical infrastructure. Glass and chrome steel characterize the above-ground part, under the earth archaically acting catacombs are created with vaults reminiscent of the Pantheon. There is a naturally constant temperature, which is optimal for the very long storage in barrels, barriques and bottles. Everything is thought out. The transport of the liquids takes place without pumps, so only by gravity. The barriques are made in the own cooperage of French oak. Much has changed in viticulture too. Maurizio Zanella is constantly following the latest scientific findings. Reduction to the essentials and the right thing in his time are his foreign exchange. This attitude is also reflected in his ecological thinking. All vineyards have been restructured, the planting density is between 6000 and 10 000 sticks per hectare. The aim of compaction is to minimize the burden on the individual plants and thereby obtain higher extract values. The strict functionality of the technical facilities, the precious materials and the minimalist, simple architecture of the buildings also form an excellent platform for the art collection of Maurizio Zanella – his second great passion. For example, Stefano Bombardieri’s sculpture «Il peso del tempo sospeso / Rino», a powerful rhino, hovers above the chrome-gleaming fermentation tanks: an absolute contrast to the elegance and filigree quality of the wines produced here. First and foremost, Ca ‘del Bosco is famous for its sparkling wines that compete with the best of Champagne. Their fineness they gain during a bottle storage on the yeast, which lasts at least two years – longer than it is required for a champagne. This process is crucial to the fineness of the perlage.
