VIDEO 094. CAL BATLLET PART.1

May 13. 2014

Marc Ripoll was living a live in Barcelona, where he never felt comfortable. He decided to return to Priorat as a young person in his twenties to take care of the family vineyards in Gratallops. With a lot of passions he founded Cellers Ripoll Sans in 2000.

Previously, the grapes were always sold to the local cooperative. Marc completely renovated the old winery and built Closa Battlet. The old structures of the building were retained and equipped with the latest technical installations. The grapes are all from his own vineyards. Some vines are even older than 100 years. They are planted on the typical Priorat hills with their Llicorella soils. The vineyards are divided between Gratallops and Tooroja del Priorat. The 10 hectares of vineyards are all biologically (Biodynamic) maintained.

On my first wine trip to Priorat (a very mystic wine region in Catalonia you should visit when spending time in Barcelona), I was introduced to Marc Ripoll by Jürgen Wagner (winemaker of Celler de Capçanes in the D.O. Montsant). I was immediately pleased by Marcs passion for vines and wines and of course, after having tasted his wines, I felt that this is special young winemaker, who deserves attention in the future.

Enjoy this first part of the interview.
