September 20. 2011
The great upswing of the Fattoria di Fèlsina began in 1966, when the great shipowner Domenico Poggiali from Ravenna acquired the neat estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga in the Chianti Classico area. The new owner immediately began to thoroughly study the vineyards on the approximately 400 hectares of land. He also built underground cellars that resisted high temperature fluctuations. The really big breakthrough came then Poggialis son Giuseppe Mazzocolin. The reduction of grape yields in the vineyard, new educational systems, a later harvest – combined with a higher ripeness of the grapes – were the most important innovations.
In 1983, Fattoria di Fèlsina decided to produce wines as naturally as possible in the future. More important than the amount of crop yields, Mazzocolin is still a high biodiversity in the vineyards to protect the cultivated areas from pests. The landowner also implemented suggestions from the enologist Franco Bernabei. He had been advised to select the best, healthiest and hardest Sangiovese vines in the eleven locations of Fèlsina and use them for a targeted field selection. This example proves that the close connection of the grape variety to the terroir is a very important component of Fèlsina’s wines.
