VIDEO 017. GRAHAM´S PORT

May 20. 2011

The quality of Graham’s Port has always been and is still outstanding today. The port wines of the British family business, which was founded in 1820, are among the top products of its kind.

There were two brothers from Scotland, who founded in 1820 the port wine business in Porto. William and John Graham were no strangers in the world of trade and big money. Her family operated extensively both in her native Scotland and in India, which at that time belonged to the British Empire. So they could afford to accept the offer from a debtor who offered them 27 barrels of port instead of cash.

The port had to have been so good that William and John Graham decided a short time later, even enter this business. Contemporary historians described the two brothers as “commercial princes of the United Kingdom.” The success of the partnership “W & J Graham & Co” makes the name of the company almost 200 years after its founding one of the most well-known ports.

In the 19th century, the reputation of Graham’s port wines rose rapidly, resulting in the company experiencing an unprecedented rise as a manufacturer of fine, exclusive ports. Already in 1890, the brothers John and William Graham invested with their port wine company first in the vineyards in the Douro Valley and thus acquired famous property: The winery Quinta dos Malvedos. The Douro Valley proved to be perfect for the Graham brothers’ project: an excellent southern exposure, a very fine composition of soil, good gradients that favor drainage, and a perfect mountain plateau to provide the finest grapes far and wide. The plan of John and William Graham opened: Malvedos has since become known as one of the best Portuguese wineries ever. Graham’s is now supplied by several privately held wineries located in the Rio Torto community. All of them are among the best in the Upper Douro Valley.

Originally founded by John and William Graham, the company was acquired in 1970 by the family Symington. Their ancestors had already made port wine in four generations and thus gained a lot of experience in port wine. Today, the Symington family takes care of everything that goes into wine making: from ordering the vineyards to the final bottling of Graham’s Port wines.

John and William Graham’s traditional location is The Graham’s 1890 Lodge at Vila Nova de Gaia. The lodge, where once the harvest was shipped from the wineries, is located on the banks of the Douro River, overlooking the historic center of Porto. Today you can take part in a Port Wine Dégustation on the terrace in the most wonderful weather, and take a tour into the spectacular world of port wines.

In part.2 of the interview, Paul Symington and Piero are talking about the classic port wine vinification and its culture. Both taste Graham´s Vintage Port 2007 – just to figure out how mind blowing good this wine is.
