Penfolds, however, is no longer the small, ambitious project of Max Schubert, the inventor of Grange, but one of those Australian wine empires that crucially dominates the market – but at the highest quality level. And so excellent wines are produced in all segments, for which only the vineyard characteristics dictate the guidelines and not management decisions.

Peter Gago is responsible for the big line as Chief Winemaker, only the best grape material comes into the bottle. A specialty of Penfolds is the blending of wines from grapes of different regions – in order to combine the best characteristics of each other in addition, as well as the balanced and skilful barrels – no weaknesses on all levels.

In this episode Peter and Piero are tasting and talking about Cabernet Sauvignon BIN 707 vintage 2008 and Grange vintage 2006.

BIN 707 vintage 2008 from Penfolds received its grapes from Coonawarra, Barossa Valley and Wrattonbully. Deep and dark garnetred colored with a light transparency. Very open and still young. Full impact of dark fruits like cassis, mulberries and kirsch. Shades of green pepper, eucalyptus, dark chocolate and mocha. Elegant and expanding on the palate. Juicy with an intensive fruit. Fine-grained tannins and a focused acidity. Extraordinary finish. Best now through 2030+.

Grange vintage 2006 from Penfolds is a blend of Shiraz 98% and Cabernet sauvignon 2%. Deep and dark garnetred colored. Explosion! Grange 2006 reveals many spices combined with dark fruits. Intermixed with hints tobacco, chocolate and mocha. Power and elegance. Delicious and ultra-complex. Soft and expanding on the palate with a juicy and intense fruit. Fine-grained zttannins and a balanced acidity. Will age very well. Very prolonged and spicy finish. Best from 2016 through 2040+.
